Sweetgrass Harvesting & Basketmaking

You have read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer:

Please DO NOT ASK where you can go pick sweetgrass

For Wabanaki people sweetgrass is sacred.  The locations of picking areas are guarded by the community and pickers have developed reciprocal relationships with the land for generations.  Please do not disturb these relationships in your quest to pick sweetgrass.

Please DO NOT PLANT it

There has been little scientific research on this plant species and sweetgrass in other areas of the country and it is not the same species that you will find here.  By planting sweetgrass, you have the potential of introducing an invasive species as well as disturbing fragile eco systems.

Please SUPPORT Wabanaki artists

By purchasing Wabanaki art, you support not only the artists, but foster the perpetuation of these ancient traditions and artforms for future generations.
