Natalie Dana Lolar, of Puwyakoninut Creations, is a Passamaquoddy-Penobscot artist from Motahkomikuk Indian Township. The great, great, great, great granddaughter of the renowned Passamaquoddy artist Tomah Joseph, granddaughter of Joan Dana and Mary Theresa Lola. Natalie carries on her family’s creative legacy through drums, beadwork, quillwork and birch bark art. She draws her energies, passions and love for traditional art forms from those who came before and those who have not yet come to be. Natalie lives on Indian Island with her husband Kyle and children Susep, Aseli and Neyanna.
Natalie Dana Lonar currently focuses on creating drums, generally handheld sizes such as 10″, 12″, 14″ and 16″. Drums can be made with natural hide color; hides can be dyed various colors, options of tie dyed patterns, and solid colors, a portion of the drum can be painted on as well. Natalie’s style of painting shows the shadow of animals; the paint color used is usually black.
