Maya Glyph Activity – Step 1

Step 1: Take your name, and break it down into the phonetic syllables.

Don’t focus on how your name is spelled, focus instead on how it sounds.  Your goal is to break your name into its separate sounds.

Maya syllable glyphs generally use either one vowel or one consonant-vowel combination (with the vowel at the end), so you might have to add a (silent) vowel to some of your syllables to make sounds that end in a consonant. The silent vowel should be the same as the vowel before it.

Here are some examples:

Amanda becomes A-ma-n(a)-da

Benjamin becomes Be-n(e)-ja-mi-n(i)

Kristen becomes K(a)-ri-ste-n(e)

Once you have your name broken into syllables, you are ready for the next step!
