Hudson Museum Scavenger Hunt: Haida House Post

Where did it come from?

This totem pole is a replica of one from the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada in the Haida village of Tanu.

It was a house post in the “Easy to Enter House.” The original of this pole was part of the William P. Palmer III Collection and is now in the collection of the Canadian Museum of History. You can see it there in the Grand Hall.

The designs on the pole include a land grizzly bear and a sea grizzly bear.

The Haida People

The Haida homeland is Haida Gwaii, an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia.

The Haida have lived here for over 13,000 years.
