HM 107

hm107HM 107:Goats
AD 1000-1250, Mexico

Description: Appraisal96 The bowl is black on white with two goats in the center and a geometric checkerboard design. Geometric checkerboard design motif around top of bowl as well. Some chipping on rim and hole center bottom. Good condition. The bowl was a gift from William P. Palmer III in 1982. From the Mimbres culture, the bowls were often found in gravesites. Certain bowls were used as mortuary vessels. These were placed over the head in burials. Their bases were ceremonially “killed” to allow the spirit of the bowl to accompany the deceased’s spirit into the future world.
