Challenge Week 4

Week 4 – The Final Stretch!

Today begins Week 4, the final week of the Maine Home Food Waste Challenge! This week you should use all our food waste reduction tips and resources to really reduce your home food waste. The final Week 4 Leaderboard will show not only your week-to-week reduction, but also your food waste reduction from Week 1 to Week 4. So let’s see how low you can go in Week 4!!

Week 4 Food Waste Tips:
New Recipes = Tasty Food Waste Solutions

For this final week, many of you have asked for recipe ideas to help turn potentially wasted food (think leftovers, refrigerator cleanouts, wilty produce, mushy fruits and trims) into delicious, money-saving food ideas. What if you could save money and end food waste by creating your own episode of the TV show, Chopped – using creative chef ideas to make tasty new meals out of your own potentially wasted food?

Here are some great resources to get you started.

  • Visit SuperCook to find great recipes that use up just the ingredients that you have. Similar ingredient-based recipe search sites can be found here.
  • Check out this yummy online Hawaiian cookbook developed with the EPA. It includes recipes and food waste tips all in one place!
  • Look at these great zero waste chef cookbooks and free videos like Cooking Scrappy and Waste Not (video1: scraps/trims, video 2: stale bread, video 3: overripe fruit). As a special Challenge tip, get a FREE download of IKEA’s Waste Less cookbook – with recipes you can use every day!

Hopefully these new resources will inspire you long after the Challenge ends!

We would love to hear more your food waste reduction journey. Send an email to us at: foodrescuemaine@maine.edu. You can also join our Challenge Facebook Group and share your stories and photos with other Challenge participants. Feel free to send in what tips are working for you!

Keep up the great work – you’re nearly there!
