Challenge Week 2

Week 2 – GO!

Hurray – it’s Week 2 of the Maine Home Food Waste Challenge!

Today is the start of new food waste collecting for Week 2. Make sure to start with your empty and rinsed-out food waste collection container. If you are using our printable tracker, you can easily record your Week 2 data there.

With the start of Week 2, we want to share a variety of tips and resources to help you reduce your food waste.

Week 2 Food Waste Tips: Plan More, Waste Less

We heard you… you bought and even cooked good food to eat, but somehow you forgot it, bought or made too much, or simply “lost” the food in the back of your fridge – now you can’t eat it! What to do?

  • Create an “Eat this First” section in your fridge – you won’t lose good, valuable food any more!
  • Shop your fridge or pantry first, and make sure you bring a list to the store – this way you can ensure you are only buying food you need for your weekly recipes!
  • Plan your meals – a planner ensures that you buy only what you will eat and eat what you buy.
  • Download our easy to use Meal Planner form to help you get started.

Use any or all of these tips to help reduce your Week 2 food waste the most! If you are more of a visual shopper, feel free to check out the EPA’s resource on Smart Shopping to help in your food waste reduction efforts as well!

We would love to hear more about how we can help. Send an email to foodrescuemaine@maine.edu with any questions or comments about the Challenge. You can also join our Challenge Facebook Group and share your own helpful tips or photos with other Challenge participants!

Keep up the great work!
