Volunteer Position Descriptions
Faculty Assistants
Faculty assistants are responsible for assisting faculty with regalia and lined up in proper order for the processional. They will march with faculty members to the arena floor. Upon arrival at the arena floor, Faculty Assistants transition to Floor Monitors.
Flag Assistants
Flag Assistants will assist students as they arrive at the Alfond Arena with international flags and college banners, ensuring that the international flags are placed in the appropriate holders near the stage, and that college banners are placed in their holders next to the students. Once the ceremony has begun, Flag Assistants will assist as Floor Monitors.
Floor Monitor
Floor Monitors assist on the floor of the arena by guiding students and faculty to and from seating and stage and prevent family and friends from entering the arena floor. Some floor monitors may also be tasked with assisting the faculty marshals with guiding students back to their rows after crossing the stage.
Program Distributor
Program distributors are stationed at each entrance to the arena and greet guests while passing out programs. During the ceremony, program distributors will assist as ushers.
Skybox Staff
Skybox Staff are responsible for checking in all skybox ticket holders, escorting them to the appropriate skybox, and monitoring the access stairwells to the upper skybox area.
Ticket Scanners
All Commencement guests for the Saturday ceremonies require a ticket to enter Alfond Arena. Tickets are not required for the Friday ceremony. Ticket scanners are stationed at the designated entrances to the Alfond Arena. Their main tasks are to greet guests and scan tickets.
Ushers
Ushers are stationed throughout the Alfond Arena and are responsible for guiding guests to their seats, providing directions to restrooms and concessions, keeping aisles clear, and preventing guests from moving to the arena floor at any time.
Special Accommodations Support
Special Accommodations Support Team members assist in welcoming guests requiring assistance. This includes greeting guests at the Special Accommodations entrance, scanning tickets, and ushering guests to the appropriate section. Special Accommodations Support Team members transition to floor monitors and ushers once all guests are seated.
Student Assistants
Student Assistants are first stationed in the New Balance Fieldhouse and are responsible for ensuring that students are properly dressed in regalia, have their blue reader cards, and are in the appropriate line. Student Assistants then march to the arena floor with students, ensuring students remain in the appropriate line. Upon arrival to the arena, Student Assistants will assist Floor Monitors.
Greeters
Greeters are stationed outside Alfond Arena prior to the ceremony start and are responsible for keeping the flow of the lines moving, assisting guests with questions, and directing to the appropriate entrance. Once all guests have entered, greeters assist as ushers or floor monitors.
Shuttle Assistants
Shuttle Assistants will ride on the busses, greet guests, advise on policies and provide general assistance. Buses will only be provided for the Saturday ceremonies.
Diploma Folder Assistant
The diploma folder assistant will stand on stage during the commencement ceremony and pass the diploma folders to the Deans as the student process across the stage.
