UMaine Extension Offers Intermediate Beekeeping Courses

There’s still room in our intermediate beekeeping course in January 2014.

Master Beekeepers Jack Hildreth and Erin MacGregor-Forbes will instruct an intermediate level beekeeping course titled Apiary Management at USM in Portland consecutive Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., from Jan. 8, 2014 to Feb. 12, 2014. The $130 per-person fee includes a textbook; a $180 fee covers two family members and a textbook to share. The intermediate level beekeeping course is designed for beekeepers that have more than two years of beekeeping experience and / or currently manage 2 or more hives.

2013 FAMACHA Workshops for Sheep and Goat Producers

If you are a sheeSheep in barnp or goat producer and would like to gain the skills and knowledge to fight the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contorutus) in your sheep and goats, then the one day FAMACHA workshop is for you. You will learn how to use the blood color of the capillaries around the eye of the sheep or goat to determine the degree of infection. The barber pole worm is a blood sucking internal parasite that is a common cause of death and poor-doing in small ruminants.

The workshops will be presented by Dr. Thomas Settlemire & Dr. Richard Brzozowski. Participants will receive an information packet, record sheets and a FAMACHA card.

There will be three separate dates to choose from:

10 AM-12 PM, Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Northeast Livestock Expo (NELE) on the Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, Maine

OR

11 AM-1 PM, Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Maine Fiber Frolic on the Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, Maine

OR

11 AM-1 PM, Saturday, June 15, 2013, at MOFGA Farm & Homestead Day, Unity, Maine

Award Winning Displays at Cumberland Fair

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Homemaker Group displays at the Cumberland Fair Exhibit Hall featured topics learned throughout the year at statewide meetings and other learning opportunities.

3 of our 6 Cumberland County Extension Homemaker Groups entered Cumberland Fair Exhibit Hall Community Displays. The award winners are:

Gray Extension Homemakers group took 1st place with this display.

The Windham White Rock Extension Group took 2nd place.
