Poultry Keepers School

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is partnering with the Maine Poultry Growers Association in presenting a day-long school for poultry producers scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Kennebec Valley Community College in Fairfield from 9:00Am to 3:00PM. Additional co-sponsors for the school include the Maine Farm Bureau and the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association.

The purpose of the school is to equip Maine producers of poultry meat or eggs with practical knowledge and skills to improve their production and quality of their products. The school is designed for full or part-time farmers with a poultry enterprise. However, the information presented will also be suitable for backyard keepers, bird fanciers and 4-H teens.

A team of instructors from the Umaine Extension, MOFGA and the agricultural community will cover topics of poultry nutrition, efficient production, poultry health, best management practices, organic production considerations, labor saving tips and poultry meat quality.

The fee for participating in this school is $25 per person. A discounted fee of $10 is available to memebers of the Maine Poultry Growers Association (MPGA). Each participant will receive a reference notebook, a poultry breakeven calculator and refreshments. (participants should bring their own lunch)

UMaine Extension Backyard Locavore Event Tickets on Sale

Our 5th Annual Backyard Locavore Day will be held on Aug. 10 in various communities within Cumberland County. Events in Brunswick, Falmouth, Freeport, North Yarmouth, Portland, Raymond, South Portland, Scarborough and Windham begin at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Registration is $15 in advance, $20 day of event and children under 12 are free. This is a rain or shine event.

Registrants will receive a booklet in July describing each site and a map showing specific locations. Locavore Day is designed to educate members of the public about learn do-it-yourself strategies for becoming a locavore, who is someone who eats food grown or produced locally. Every year more and more people grow, raise, harvest and preserve foods in a sustainable way to meet individual food needs.

Each backyard will have a Master Gardener volunteer to answer your questions on gardening methods, including vegetable and square-foot gardening, backyard composting, root cellars, greenhouses, beekeeping, backyard poultry.  Specific food-preservation methods such as drying, hot water bath canning, making herbal vinegars and jam making may be discussed with a Master Food Preserver volunteer.  There will be complementary food samples.

This event raises funds for the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Cumberland County Food Preservation Programming at the UMaine Regional Learning Center in Falmouth.

 

 

2013 FAMACHA Workshops for Sheep and Goat Producers

If you are a sheeSheep in barnp or goat producer and would like to gain the skills and knowledge to fight the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contorutus) in your sheep and goats, then the one day FAMACHA workshop is for you. You will learn how to use the blood color of the capillaries around the eye of the sheep or goat to determine the degree of infection. The barber pole worm is a blood sucking internal parasite that is a common cause of death and poor-doing in small ruminants.

The workshops will be presented by Dr. Thomas Settlemire & Dr. Richard Brzozowski. Participants will receive an information packet, record sheets and a FAMACHA card.

There will be three separate dates to choose from:

10 AM-12 PM, Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Northeast Livestock Expo (NELE) on the Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, Maine

OR

11 AM-1 PM, Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Maine Fiber Frolic on the Windsor Fairgrounds, Windsor, Maine

11 AM-1 PM, Saturday, June 15, 2013, at MOFGA Farm & Homestead Day, Unity, Maine
