Future recipients of the Distinguished Alum Award will be chosen from the recipients of the Award of Professional Excellence.<\/p>\n<p><sup>a<\/sup> \u2013 deceased<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"2\"><\/a>Description:<\/h2>\n<p>The purpose of the Award of Professional Excellence is to recognize long-term excellence in service to the professions of wildlife, fisheries, and conservation biology by former students (graduate or undergraduate) associated with the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Conservation Biology (the Department) or its predecessor programs. The Department realizes that significant numbers of former students have served their profession long and well, and in doing so have honored themselves and the Department.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"#top\">Return to top.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"3\"><\/a>Criteria:<\/h2>\n<p>To be considered for this award, nominees should have a record of outstanding and long-term (<u>&gt;<\/u>\u00a015 yrs. post-graduation) contributions to the wildlife profession, including aquatic sciences, conservation biology, fisheries, wildlife ecology, and natural resource management.\u00a0 In particular, nominees should have a record of making contributions to the profession beyond the basic tasks associated with their position(s).\u00a0 Examples may include significant involvement in professional societies, leadership roles within their organizations (e.g. leading species recovery efforts, chairship of working groups), or noteworthy conservation impacts with local, regional, or national significance.<\/p>\n<p>Alums will be considered eligible to receive this award if they have received a B.S. degree in Wildlife Management or Wildlife Ecology from the University of Maine, or if they were a graduate student advised or co-advised by a member of the Full Graduate Faculty in the Department, regardless of degree conferred.<\/p>\n<h2>Procedure:<\/h2>\n<p>The Department will annually solicit nominations for candidates for the award through <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScUV3II9pVh_LIvyWJK_WKXnU80qRITIjGbnQ2GwMKEY2JQbw\/viewform?usp=header\">an online nomination process<\/a>.\u00a0 Nominations materials should include the following:<\/p>\n<p>1) The candidate&#8217;s name, and if known, year of graduation and degree(s) conferred.<\/p>\n<p>2) Contact information for the nominee (email)<\/p>\n<p>3) A nomination summary describing the nominee\u2019s contributions to the profession and qualifications with respect to award criteria. We encourage nominators to highlight elements of the nominee\u2019s background that illustrate their leadership characteristics and overall impact to the profession.<\/p>\n<p>4) The nominee\u2019s CV may be submitted but is not required.<\/p>\n<p>Nominations will be reviewed annually by the Department\u2019s Alum Award Committee, who will recommend up to 6 recipients.\u00a0 These recommendations will be forwarded to the faculty for final approval.\u00a0 The Department Chair will forward a certificate of recognition to each recipient and post their name on the list of recipients on the department\u2019s website. \u00a0This registry will include the recipient\u2019s name and date(s) of degree(s) from the University of Maine.\u00a0 The recipients of the Award of Professional Excellence will be announced each year at the USGS Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>To nominate an alum for the Award of Professional Excellence, please complete this nomination form.\u00a0 Nominations are accepted at any time, but for full consideration should be submitted by May 15 each year.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"4\"><\/a><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><a href=\"#top\">Return to top.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recipients | Description | Criteria | How to Nominate Recipients: 2025 Brian E.
