{"id":21,"date":"2010-01-27T10:28:41","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T15:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/wle\/?page_id=21"},"modified":"2025-08-13T12:15:33","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T16:15:33","slug":"concentrations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/wle\/undergraduate-program\/concentrations\/","title":{"rendered":"Concentrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students majoring in Wildlife Ecology are expected to use their electives to develop an area of specialization.\u00a0 Most students meet this expectation by taking one of three Concentrations defined by the department: <strong>Fisheries<\/strong>,<strong> Wildlife Science and Management<\/strong>, or<strong> Conservation Biology<\/strong>.\u00a0 Some students complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xQVaeJQN93E?si=qX3TUDFJHYgrzP8G\">Honors Program<\/a> or pursue a Minor in a related discipline as approved by their advisor and Undergraduate Program Coordinator as an alternative to a Concentration. Students may also design an <strong>Individual Concentration<\/strong> according to the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">NOTE<\/span><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Concentration courses may be used to meet your General Education requirements, however, <em>courses should be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">complementary and additive<\/span> to the<\/em> <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">core curriculum<\/span><\/em>, i.e., <strong>core curriculum courses cannot be counted twice. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Individual Concentrations<\/h3>\n<p>Students who wish to develop an individualized Concentration must write a proposal explaining the rationale for their choice, describing how it fits with their interests and career goals, and listing the courses that they wish to take.\u00a0 Please note that an Individual Concentration cannot be listed on your diploma or transcript.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.umaine.edu\/preview_program.php?catoid=95&amp;poid=14781&amp;returnto=4604\">Concentration in Fisheries &#8211; scroll down to see concentrations<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The fisheries concentration curriculum enables students to explore the scientific and applied aspects of fisheries ecology and management and gain experience in field, laboratory, and analytical methods. Students enrolled in this concentration often are active in the University\u2019s student chapter of the American Fisheries Society (AFS), an international organization composed of professionals and students in the aquatic sciences.
