This competition is open to all University of Maine students.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2021 Topic<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Applicants were asked to reflect on this quotation drawn from Dr. King\u2019s celebrated Letter from a Birmingham Jail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>\u201cWe know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed. Frankly, I have never yet engaged in a direct-action movement that was \u2018well timed\u2019 according to the timetable of those who have not suffered unduly from the disease of segregation. For years now I have heard the word \u2018wait\u2019&#8230; We must come to see with the distinguished jurist of yesterday that \u2018justice too long delayed is justice denied.\u2019\u201d \u2013 Letter from a Birmingham Jail, 1963<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf \u00a0At what point does justice become \u201cdenied\u201d \u2013 how does one tell the difference between appropriate patience and delaying justice too long?
