Response to Shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh

Rev. Rebecca Liberty, Director of the Wilson Center, released the following statement on behalf of the Wilson Center and its Board of Directors:

The Wilson Center joins the Jewish community locally and beyond in mourning the murders at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on October 27. We mourn the attack that reaches beyond a single congregation to Jews everywhere and the freedom to practice one’s faith in peace and safety. We join the Jewish community in anger at this latest outbreak of antisemitism, especially in the midst of a public discourse in which immigrants, people of color, and other minoritized communities are regularly maligned.

At this time, we acutely understand the need for people of diverse backgrounds to work together. As a multi-faith community, the Wilson Center re-dedicates itself to our mission of honoring diversity, working for social justice, and valuing above all the dignity and equality of all people.  As Congregation Beth El in Bangor stated in response to the attack: “Let us turn to our deepest calling to be B’tzelem Elohim/in the image of the Divine. That is to be the hands, heart, and actions in this country and in our world that work to end this kind of hatred and violence.”
