Evie Layland

I graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science in 2019. While at BU I had the chance to conduct field work in Belize, work as a marine mammal research and education intern at the New England Aquarium, and pursue various recreational scuba certifications with East Coast Divers before completing my AAUS Scientific Diver certification through Boston University. Following graduation, I spent a year working as a Northeast Fisheries Observer where I collected data onboard commercial fishing vessels. This experience piqued my interest in the fields of fisheries science and marine ecology, and led me to the Wahle Lab at UMaine.

I am now pursuing my master’s degree and am co-advised by Dr. Richard Wahle and Dr. David Fields at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. My current research focuses on changes in prey size selectivity of larval American Lobsters throughout their development. In addition to conducting feeding experiments to explore size specific prey preferences, I am also collecting fine scale videos of the predatory behavior of larval lobsters in order to quantify their ability to handle and capture prey items.
