Welcome to the Machias area!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Machias is a wonderful stop along Route 1 when in DownEast<\/strong><\/a>. It can serve as a hub to visit all of the surrounding towns, and has plenty to do within its limits! This area of Maine has plenty to offer for everyone making the journey; there are beaches, small shops, delicious dining options, hiking, and much more within this beautiful area.<\/em><\/p>\n

The word “Machias” originates in the native Passamaquoddy language, meaning “bad little falls” which likely refers to the river that runs through town, the Machias River. Machias has a rich history as a local hub for transportation. Rumor has it that centuries ago, a pirate by the name of Black Bellamy buried a treasure chest full of riches in an underground timber vault somewhere in town, reminiscent of the famous Oak Island treasure in nearby Nova Scotia!<\/p>\n

One small town that we are including in this section is Roque Bluffs<\/strong>.\u00a0 This lovely small town is about 8 miles south of Machias with a population of about 300 people and is home to the beautiful Rogue Bluffs State Park.<\/p>\n
