Note – we put some scheduled times in here just to give you some ideas. You can pick and choose what you want to do. Be sure to look at when they are open and if there are any COVID restrictions. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to call any that you plan to visit just to be on the safe side.

Day 1

9:00 AM Crumbs Cafe and Bake Shop

  Start the day with a warm cup of coffee paired with a delicious homemade baked good before the day’s adventures begin! This sit down cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner that truly makes you feel as if you’re home away from home!

10:30 am Calais Walkway

Winter Take a hot cocoa and stroll along the Calais Walkway! Just a short distance away from the Crumb Cafe and Bake Shop makes this the perfect place to enjoy the still white, winter setting. Take in the beauty the walkway provides with a view of the icy riverfront and beautiful fluffy snow! 

11:00 am Sipayik Trail

Sipayik Trail ME

This short 1.8 mile track is the best place to break out the cross country skiis or snowshoes. Burn off the breakfast calories and enjoy the crisp winter as you go along the trail. With views ranging from the Little River, Gleason Cove, Western Passage as well as the eastern side promising the Bay in New Brunswick, of St. Andrews and Deer Island.

 Stop at this family owned restaurant for your cozy fix! Ranging from a classic grilled cheese delight to a fresh dough pizza to satisfy those at home cravings, Jo’s Diner and Pizzeria will serve you well!  

2:30 pm Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge

Located between Eastport and Calais along US Route 1 in the DownEast region, where in the winter, trailheads are directly off US Route 1

Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge

With more than 10 miles of trails and a wheelchair accessible trail Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge provides several options to continue the winter adventures. Whether sledding, using snowshoes, or cross country skiing these trails will leave you surrounded by the winter wonderland Maine’s nature has to offer.

Packing List

The weather in Maine can be unpredictable. Therefore, here are some ideas to be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers, Maine is very casual, so you probably will not find any restaurants that require formal attire.

 

Spring/Summer/Fall: clothes, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking, sun hat, sunscreen, sweater or jacket, insect repellent, toiletries, and phone/camera

Winter: clothes (layers), ski pants highly recommended, winter boots, jacket, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toiletries, and phone/camera. Please pack a helmet if you are participating in snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding

Did you know…

The St. Croix River that runs through Calais rises and falls 25 feet each day and is pulled by the Atlantic Ocean into Passamaquoddy Bay.

 

Calais is the hometown to the first railroad built in the state, and was built in order to transport lumber. 

 

Whitlocks Mill Light Lighthouse is used to this day consisting of a tower, keeper’s house, equipment shed, oil house, and bell house.
