Itinerary Note

Note – we put some scheduled times in here just to give you some ideas. You can pick and choose what you want to do. Be sure to look at when they are open and if there are any COVID restrictions. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to call any that you plan to visit just to be on the safe side.


Day 1 - Presque Isle

9:00 AM – Breakfast at Governor’s Restaurant & Bakery

Start off your day at Governor’s Restaurant & Bakery, a classic Maine chain, for breakfast where they are serving up delicious meals and baked goods to get you ready for the day. 

10 min drive to Nordic Heritage Center

Head over to the Nordic Heritage Center, a world-class Nordic skiing and biathlon venue complete with a stadium, lodge, and 20 kilometers of trails at all difficulty levels! Spend the morning enjoying their extensive trail network. Very affordable gear rentals are available here if needed.

15 min drive to Mainely Mexican

12:45 PM – Lunch at Mainely Mexican

Spice things up with some delicious Mexican cuisine at the newly-opened and highly popular Mainely Mexican.

15 min drive to Aroostook State Park

2:00 PM – Aroostook State Park

Spend the remaining daylight hours exploring Aroostook State Park’s groomed winter trails. Take in the endless natural beauty, and have a nice rest by the fire in one of the two trailside warming huts.

15 min drive to Irish Setter Pub

5:00 PM – Dinner at Irish Setter Pub

Relax and reward yourself after a long and cold day of adventures at the Irish Setter Pub in Presque Isle, for a relaxing pub atmosphere where you can find a variety of great food.

 

Day 2 - Caribou

8:30 AM – Breakfast at Teresa’s Corner Cafe and Bakery

Start your day off right with classic American breakfast items, baked goods, and hot coffee at Teresa’s Corner Cafe and Bakery.

35 min drive to Bangor and Aroostook Trail

10:05 AM – Bangor and Aroostook Trail

This 61-mile multi-use trail that is part of northern Maine’s Interconnected Trail System provides yet another great winter activity opportunity. Access the trail from Otter Street in Caribou.

20 min drive to Big Cheese Pizza

12:30 PM – Lunch at Big Cheese Pizza

Enjoy a classic pizza lunch at Big Cheese Pizza, a local chain offering big, delicious pies at good prices.

10 min walk or 1 min drive to Nylander Museum

Take a break from the trails with a visit to this great local museum, a real treat if you’re interested in learning more about Aroostook County’s fauna. Open Saturday and Sunday afternoons and by appointment.

20 min drive to Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge

Find even more beautiful trails at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge, which is located on the grounds of the former Loring Air Force Base. The 7 miles of groomed trails offer plenty of nature to be explored here.

25 min drive to Northern Maine Brewing Company

In addition to being one of Northern Maine’s best microbreweries, Northern Maine Brewing Company serves up some of the finest food in the area. Enjoy a nice dinner here before wrapping up your trip!

Packing Checklist

The weather in Maine can be unpredictable. Therefore, here are some ideas to be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers, Maine is very casual, so you probably will not find any restaurants that require formal attire.

 

Spring/Summer/Fall: clothes, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking, sun hat, sunscreen, sweater or jacket, insect repellent, toiletries, and phone/camera

Winter: clothes (layers), ski pants highly recommended, winter boots, jacket, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toiletries, and phone/camera. Please pack a helmet if you are participating in snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding.
