Note – we put some scheduled times in here just to give you some ideas. You can pick and choose what you want to do. Be sure to look at when they are open and if there are any COVID restrictions. In fact, it would probably be a good idea to call any that you plan to visit just to be on the safe side.
Fall Hiking Itinerary
Two-Day Itinerary
Day One
Morning:
7:30 am: Breakfast: The County Bakery

Start the day off right with a fresh, delicious doughnut or loaf of bread!
[Travel Time to Aroostook State Park: 14 minutes]
8:30 am: Aroostook State Park

Go on a beautiful hike on the Quaquajo Trail to see the gorgeous Maine fall colors! Stop to take in the breathtaking views (and pictures) at both the North and South peaks!

Afternoon:

Enjoy a delicious burger, sub, chicken fingers, or seafood! And do not forget to get ice cream after!

[Travel Time to Peekaboo Mountain: 7 minutes]
3:30 pm: Peekaboo Mountain Look-Out Tower

Once you arrive at the trailhead, park your car at the bottom of the trail (on the side of the Harris Hill road) and walk up to the tower. (It is highly recommended that you do not attempt to drive your car up, you will most likely cause severe damage to your car.)
Special Note: This destination is not safe for everyone. This is a tower with semi-steep steps and railings; the top is primarily enclosed. Please use caution when visiting and be smart. Not recommended for children.

Day Two:

[Travel Time to Ashland Diner: 27 minutes]

Stop in at the Mapleton Diner for late lunch or early dinner to get pizza, sandwiches, and more.

3:30 pm Haystack Mountain
Haystack Road, Castle Hill, ME 04757
Head to Haystack Mountain in Castle Hill for a short, moderately difficult-level hike. The mountain is said to have one of the best 360-degree views in the country, making for a stunning view of Aroostook County’s fall foliage.

Packing Checklist
The weather in Maine can be unpredictable. Therefore, here are some ideas to be prepared. Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers, Maine is very casual, so you probably will not find any restaurants that require formal attire.
Spring/Summer/Fall: clothes, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes for walking, sun hat, sunscreen, sweater or jacket, insect repellent, toiletries, and phone/camera
Winter: clothes (layers), ski pants highly recommended, winter boots, jacket, hats, scarves, gloves, warm socks, toiletries, and phone/camera. Please pack a helmet if you are participating in snowmobiling, skiing, or snowboarding.
