Machias

Machias

Welcome to Machias!

Machias is a wonderful stop along Route 1 when in DownEast. It can serve as a hub to visit all of the surrounding towns, and has plenty to do within its limits! This area of Maine has plenty to offer for everyone making the journey; there are beaches, small shops, delicious dining options, hiking, and much more within this beautiful area.

The word “Machias” originates in the native Passamaquoddy language, meaning “bad little falls” which likely refers to the river that runs through town, the Machias River. Machias has a rich history as a local hub for transportation. Rumor has it that centuries ago, a pirate by the name of Black Bellamy buried a treasure chest full of riches in an underground timber vault somewhere in town, reminiscent of the famous Oak Island treasure in nearby Nova Scotia!
