Welcome to Portage Lake!

Portage Lake, named after the lake that dominates the center of the small town, was first settled by Canadian lumbermen in 1844 and incorporated as a town in 1909. Once a booming with lumber mills, today’s Portage Lake has only a few mills and retains its Northern New England small village charm. It continues to be a popular vacation destination for its pristine natural beauty and access to the nearby North Maine Woods. Portage Lake is also the birthplace of the notable painter Lucy Hayward Baker.

Portage Lake is a great destination for enjoying nature all year, hunting, and fishing. Large animals including moose, bears, deer, and, allegedly, cougars, which are not officially recognized as present in Maine, can be sighted in Portage Lake and the surrounding area. (Source)
