Use this helpful checklist to navigate your way through the UMSS21 process.

Virtual Student Symposium – Guidelines for Presenters

UMSS21 participating students from all disciplines are invited to submit their abstracts and create recorded presentations for the Virtual 2021 UMaine Student Symposium. For further information visit our FAQ webpage.

  1. Students interested in presenting their research need to submit their written abstracts by Wednesday, March 10th, 2021 by using this form.
  2. Use the checklist to help keep track of the steps.
  3. Students will be notified that their abstract has been accepted and assigned a presentation (abstract) number categorized by academic discipline by Friday, March 19th, 2021.  Presentations will be organized by these categories and available for public viewing on the UMSS website beginning in April.
  4. All recorded video presentations need to be uploaded by the students using Kaltura by Friday, March 26, 2021. A step by step guide in uploading your video presentation is available. 
  5. Once the video presentation is uploaded to Kaltura, please fill out this form to confirm the upload. 
  6. Students must observe copyright guidelines when creating material for electronic or print publication. The Division of Marketing and Communication has an online Copyright Safe Checklist which is a useful resource for students. 
  7. The formal judging process will begin on Monday, March 29. The judging period ends Monday, April 12, 2021. Awards will be announced on Friday, April 16 during the live UMSS event. View the project evaluation rubric for more information.

Video Presentations – 5 to 10 minutes

  • Requirements:
    • MP4 video 
    • HD 720p to HD1080p maximum
    • Introductory slide or screen that includes:
      • Name
      • Abstract Number
      • Abstract Title
      • Faculty Mentor
  • Choice of:
    • PowerPoint voiceover video presentation. View the following templates as examples for a classic poster template or newer template
      • Prepare a recorded copy of your presentation.
      • The following page describes how you can create an audio recording over a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint.
      • You will need to export your PowerPoint presentation as an MP4 video file (preferred).
  • OR: Another video of your choice that helps you present your research (examples include an art exhibit, dance performance, music performance)
  • Upload your video using Kaltura by Friday, March 26, 2021

Technical Sessions – 1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. Day of Event- Friday, April 16th 

  • Zoom meeting technical sessions will be scheduled into the program to allow for students to interact about their research with others
  • Students should be prepared to present a very short elevator pitch at these sessions
  • More information will be confirmed along with the program for our event

All email correspondences will be sent to the submitting student author completing the original abstract submission. If you are presenting with more than one presenter, as the submitting author, you are responsible for passing all email correspondences and information to your co-presenters.
