Determining the Role of Prophage, Cuke, Gene Expression on Host Mycobacterium Smegmatis Gene Expression

Molecular and cell biology student Sarah McCallister’s research seeks to understand the impact of integrated phage genomes on bacterial gene expression.

“I believe by researching and determining how bacteriophage impact bacterial gene expression, we can then understand more about the bacteria that are responsible for diseases that harm us everyday,” says McCallister.

McCallister became passionate about molecular and cell biology when she took her first lab class during her first year at UMaine, and has found that the communities within UMaine and the Molecular and Biomedical department are supportive and eager for her to succeed.
