Club Feature: Honors College Student Advisory Board

The Honors College Student Advisory Board is the representative body of all the Honors students on campus, and the members of SAB serve as the bridge between Honors students and the faculty. On the administration side, some of our members attend meetings of the Honors Council, which meets twice a semester, during which we discuss Honors curriculum, goals, and provide feedback from a student’s perspective. SAB also holds events throughout the year aimed to engage Honors students and allow them connect outside of the classroom, and foster a true “Honors community” that extends beyond required reading and lectures. In the past, we have held movie nights, current event forums, and crafting events. Anyone who wants to learn more about SAB events can follow us on social media, or attend one of our meetings! We meet every Thursday at 5:30PM on the Fourth Floor of Colvin Hall, and any Honors student is welcome and encouraged to join!

For the past few years, SAB has focused a lot of our energy on planning a service activity called the Maine Day Meal Packout. Maine is one of the most food insecure states in the nation, and with nearly 20% of children in Maine being affected by food insecurity, the Honors College knew they wanted to do something to help combat this issue. For the MDMP, we partner with The Outreach Program, which is a company that helps coordinate meal-packing events all over the country. With their help, we have been able to pack more than 200,000 meals for Mainers in need. This year, we will be packing at least 65,000 meals, and have raised over $16,000 to put towards this worthy cause. These meals are not only distributed to food pantries throughout the region, but many stay close to UMaine so we can provide support to our students and community members that need it.
There are many ways to participate in the Maine Day Meal Packout! You can:
  • make a monetary donation. Just $1 feeds four people, so every little bit counts!
  • sign up to be a Team Leader for the MDMP. These dedicated volunteers help our event run as smooth as possible. They are responsible for managing each of the packing lines, making sure that each line has the necessary supplies, and organizing packed meals for dispersal to food pantries all across the state.
  • volunteer at the Maine Day Meal Packout! An event of this size requires a lot of volunteers! Last year, we had well over 300 people helping to pack meals, and we hope that just as many will come out this year! This event is not only a lot of fun, but an easy way to make a huge impact on the community in a short amount of time.
Below, I’ve included the links to sign up to be a Team Leader, the volunteer registration link, as well as the URL where donations can be made to the meal packout.
