Scholarship Winners Announced – 2017

The University of Maine Student Government is excited to announce the recipients of our 2017 UMSG Leadership Scholarship! The following members of our community exemplify the excellence in leadership, scholarly achievement and values that the University of Maine and Student Government hope to promote:

Mariya Pominova of Bedford, MA

While pursuing her B.S. in Economics at the University of Maine, Mariya has also demonstrated leadership in the roles of VP for Alpha Lambda Delta as well as Treasurer for SAAC. In addition to competing for UMaine on the Women’s Swim & Dive Team, she also works on research cooperatively with faculty members in the Climate Change Institute. All of these feats, including her extensive community service resume and 3.85 cumulative GPA, have qualified Mariya to be one of the four scholarship receipts for 2017.

Nicholas Lajoie of Van Buren, ME

Nicholas’ scholarship application was filled with countless examples of community leadership. Before founding the University of Maine’s Entrepreneurship Club and launching the ‘BlackBearHacks’ Hackathon event last Fall, he was involved with the Sophomore Owls and acting Chairman of The UMaine Business Challenge. Nicholas had no problems managing all of these commitments and more, while also maintaining a 3.95 GPA, acting as the Student Rep for the ECE department and fulfilling the role of VP of Communications for the SigEp fraternity.

Savannah Haines of Westport, MA

Savannah’s campus involvement includes membership in the Xi Sigma Pi Honor Society, the Golden Key International Honor Society and the International Society of Arboriculture. Her extensive efforts to overhaul and restructure the Maine Chapter of the Society of American Foresters on our campus, in addition to maintain a 3.83 GPA and history of volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club, made Savannah a worthy recipient of this scholarship.

Tyler Lang of Manchester, ME

Serving as an officer for the University Volunteer Ambulance Corps (UVAC), Tyler contributes to the UMaine community in some big time ways. This includes his time as President for the Health Professions Club and acting as the UMaine Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Prevention Committee Representative. Tyler is pursuing a B.S. in Zoology and has maintained a 3.93 GPA while working 50 hours a week as the Assistant Chief for UVAC.

Congratulations to all 2017 Scholarship recipients and thank you to everyone that applied!
