Sulak visited UMaine in the fall of 2004 as a Visiting Diversity Libra Professor and as part of Peace Week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anne Sibley O&#8217;Brien<\/strong> performs a one-woman theatre piece that examines whiteness\u2014&#8221;the often unconscious patterns of attitude and behavior acquired by white people.&#8221;\u00a0 Ms. O&#8217;Brien performed <em>White Lies<\/em> at UMaine in March of 2005. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitelies.ws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.whitelies.ws<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23 alignleft\" title=\"Tim Wise\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/wise.jpg\" alt=\"Tim Wise\" width=\"131\" height=\"87\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/wise.jpg 131w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/wise-105x70.jpg 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/>Tim Wise<\/strong> is one of the most prominent white anti-racist voices in the US, and has been called the &#8220;foremost white anti-racist intellectual in the nation.&#8221; His writings are taught at hundreds of colleges and have appeared in dozens of popular and professional journals. He visited UMaine in April of 2005.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.speakoutnow.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.speakoutnow.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2005\u201306 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19 alignleft\" title=\"karenpdpKaren Pace and Dionardo Pizana\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/karenpdp.png\" alt=\"Karen Pace and Dionardo Pizana\" width=\"103\" height=\"67\" \/>Karen Pace <\/strong>and<strong> Dionardo Pizana<\/strong> from the Michigan State University Extension presented workshops in March of 2006 at UMaine on Leadership in Dealing with Difficult Multicultural Discussions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2006\u201307<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17 alignleft\" title=\"Anthony Cortese\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/acortese.png\" alt=\"Anthony Cortese\" width=\"81\" height=\"100\" \/>Anthony Cortese<\/strong>, Professor of Sociology at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas visited campus in November and talked with reference to his book, <em>Opposing Hate Speech<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2007\u201308<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18 alignleft\" title=\"Anita Arnold\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/AnitaArnold.jpg\" alt=\"Anita Arnold\" width=\"95\" height=\"108\" \/>Anita Arnold<\/strong>, creator and founder of The Convergence Center <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theconvergencecenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.theconvergencecenter.org<\/a>, has been in private practice as a psychotherapist for over 20 years and has found a means to converge her &#8220;work world&#8221; with her &#8220;activist world work&#8221; as a diversity trainer, cultural competency educator and organizational consultant. She facilitated the January 2008 session of the UMDLI using the Shakti Butler film, <em>Mirrors of Privilege<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2009\u201310<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20 alignleft\" title=\"Oren Lyons\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/lyons.jpg\" alt=\"Oren Lyons\" width=\"120\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/lyons.jpg 120w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/lyons-99x140.jpg 99w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/>Oren Lyons<\/strong>, \u2022member of the Onondaga Nation\u2022member of the Traditional Circle of Indian Elders\u2022Ambassador to the United Nations \u2022international Indigenous speaker on environmental &amp; human rights issues\u2022Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo\u2022author and publisher of the Native American magazine Daybreak\u2022instructor of the Iroquois Great Law of Peace focusing on the principles of peace, equity, justice &amp; the power of good minds\u2022speaker at the Global Forum of Spiritual Leaders for Human Survival\u2022presented at \u201cPermanent Forum on Indigenous Issues\u201d &#8211; United Nations \u2022presented at \u201cA Call to Consciousness on Climate Change\u201d Symposium at the National Museum of the American Indian<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22 alignleft\" title=\"Sonia Nieto\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/sonia.png\" alt=\"Sonia Nieto\" width=\"144\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/sonia.png 205w, https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2011\/01\/sonia-105x136.png 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/>Sonia Nieto<\/strong> is Professor Emerita of Language, Literacy, and Culture, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught students at all levels from elementary through graduate school and she continues to speak and write on multicultural education, teacher preparation, the education of Latinos, and other culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Her book <em>Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education<\/em> (5th ed, 2008, with co-author Patty Bode), is widely used in teacher preparation and in service courses. Other books include <em>The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities<\/em> (1999), <em>What Keeps Teachers Going?<\/em> (2003) and three edited volumes, <em>Puerto Rican Students in U.S. Schools<\/em> (2000), <em>Why We Teach<\/em> (2005), and <em>Dear Paulo: Letters From Those Who Dare Teach<\/em> (2008). She has received many awards for her advocacy and activism, including the 1997 Multicultural Educator of the Year Award from the National Association for Multicultural Education, an Annenberg Institute Senior Fellowship (1998-2000), the Outstanding Language Arts Educator of the Year from the National Council of Teachers of English (2005), the 2008 Social Justice in Education Award from the American Educational Research Association, and honorary doctorates from Lesley University (1999), Bridgewater State College (2004), and DePaul University (2007).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial\"><b>2015\u201316<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-350\" src=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/umdli\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/182\/2017\/06\/Christine-Sleeter-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"photo of Christine Sleeter\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Christine Sleeter<\/b>, Professor Emerita, California State University, Monterey Bay, visited UMaine as a Libra Professor for the College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Sleeter is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading authority on multicultural education and diversity.
