November, 2016: Telepractice Program Receives Grant

  • The Telepractice program was awarded a $5,000 grant through the Healthy Peninsula Thriving in Place program to support a telepractice pilot program at the Friendship Cottage in Blue Hill, Maine.

October, 2016: Dr. Walker Presents Research

  • Dr. Walker traveled to Llandudno, Wales to present a telepractice research project, “Building Community in a Telepractice Communication Group” (Walker, J.P., Jacques, K., & Price, K.), at the Academy of Aphasia.

September, 2016: Aphasia Retreat

  • Telepractice students had a great time with some of their clients at the Andre R. Hemond Aphasia Retreat.

August, 2016: Fall Intensive Training2016 telepractice team

  • The 2016-2017 Telepractice Team completed their intensive training for the semester, and they are excited to begin working with clients!

September, 2015: New Partnership with RSU 10

  • The Telepractice Team has started providing services to the elementary and junior/senior high schools in Buckfield, Maine.

May, 2015: Participation in Geriatrics Conference

  • Dr. Walker served on a panel at the Tenth Annual University of Maine Geriatrics Colloquium on May 14th. The focus of the panel was community based services for an aging population.

April, 2015: Presentations

  • Linda Bonnar-Ivery and Shannon McFarland from The Pine Tree Society gave a presentationAssistive Technology Presentation entitled “Assistive Technology for Communication an Learning” on Friday, April 17 at the University of Maine.
  • UMaine Speech Therapy Telepractice team presented at Maine Head Start State Collaboration Office (MHSSCO) in Augusta.

January, 2015: Spring Semester Update

  • We welcome our new graduate students, Ana Yakimova and Katelyn Jacques, to the telepractice team.
  • The telepractice team met with faculty and staff members from the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies to discuss the potential for future collaborations.

September, 2014: Telepractice Students and Clients Attend Aphasia Retreat

  • Several graduate students and clients and their families involved in speech therapy telepractice attended the Photo of Clients at the Aphasia Retreat3rd Annual Andre R. Hemond Aphasia Retreat.  Presentations on topics about Primary Progressive Aphasia and the UMaine Speech Therapy Telepractice program were given.  Activities throughout the weekend included:  crafts, singing, massages, adaptive biking and water sports. September, 2014: Telepractice Program Receives Grant

  • Judy Walker, an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders received a grant of $174,000. from the Next Generation Foundation of Maine to support the expansion of an innovative graduate-level training program in speech therapy telepractice.

June, 2014: Telepractice Training Workshop at Minot State University

  • Judy Walker taught a two-day telepractice workshop to faculty and students in the Dept. of Communication Disorders, Minot State University, North Dakota. The focus of the workshop was in building a graduate level telepractice training program in their department.

  • UMaine speech therapy telepractice program is partnering with the International School Suva to provide speech therapy telepractice services to children attending the school.

February, 2014: Telepractice Communication Groups

  • UMaine’s speech therapy telepractice program offers communication group for clients with aphasia.  Several clients and their family members can join the group from any location in the state.  Participation in the telepractice groups builds relationships and an enhanced sense of community.
