Maintaining Aid Eligibility

If you are receiving financial aid from the University of Maine, you will need to meet certain criteria in order to maintain eligibility:

  1. Satisfactory Academic Progress – Financial aid recipients are required to meet certain measures.  These measures are:
    1. Make progress towards degree – You are required to successfully complete a minimum specified percentage of the credit/hours you attempt.
    2. Cumulative grade point average – You are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average based on the number of credits earned
    3. Completion of degree within a maximum time-frame – You are required to complete your degree within 150% of the credits needed for your degree.

  2. Course Repeats – Federal regulations allow for financial aid funds to pay for one repetition of a previously passed course.  Click here for more information on UMaine’s Course Repeat policy.
  3. Maximum Federal Direct Loan Limits – Regulations limit a first-time borrower’s eligibility for Direct Subsidized Loans to a period not to exceed 150 percent of the length of the borrower’s program.
  4. Maximum Federal Pell Grant Limits – Students are limited to six full years (12 semesters/600%) of Pell Grant eligibility during their lifetime.
