{"id":3791,"date":"2023-04-21T01:00:09","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T05:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/spire\/?p=3791"},"modified":"2023-04-21T09:04:18","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T13:04:18","slug":"caponigro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/spire\/2023\/04\/21\/caponigro\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry Series: How I Become a Place; I, You, They, Us, We"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By John Paul Caponigro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>How I Become a Place<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I eat my home.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I eat my yard.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I eat the place I live.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I put down roots by putting roots in me.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They say we replace the cells in our bodies every seven years.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That means this place has grown me many times over.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ve grown together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I often travel far from home,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and so I take home with me.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Searching all five oceans and all seven continents,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I pass through them,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and they pass through me.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m one place becoming another<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and many places becoming one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I savor the places I meet,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not just fruit, not just fiber, also:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">air, water, even dirt.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m always full and becoming fuller.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I crave intimacy with spaces, so<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I consume them and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they consume me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I go, I take parts of places with me and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I leave parts of me with them:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my skin, my hair, my scent, my flora, my blood,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my breath, my words, my thoughts, my dreams.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019m all these and they\u2019re all theirs.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I become a part of them and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they become a part of me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I can\u2019t read their scriptures wholly, so I digest them.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To live more deeply in them, I put them in me.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ashes to ashes,\u00a0dust to dust, earth to earth.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was, I am, I will be all these things.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What I\u2019ve taken out of them I\u2019ll return when I rest.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I commit the ground into my body before<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I commit my body into the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>I, You, They, Us, We<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why must i capitalize i, when<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i don<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">t capitalize you, or<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they, or we, or us?\u00a0 If<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i had to capitalize just one of<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">these i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d choose We not i. Or<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">capitalize them all with<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">respect. Maybe it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s better<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to capitalize none. With words we maintain<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">barriers built around ourselves and<br \/>\n<\/span><del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the<\/span><\/del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> our world. It<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s not that i want<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you to be me or me to<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">be you. i love the differences. i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">like to really know them; see<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you and be seen by you \u2014\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 truly, hear<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you and be heard fully, stop<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">building too many walls and build more<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bridges to beautiful<br \/>\n<\/span><del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">me<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you<\/span><\/del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> we.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What would happen if we<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only used we for<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a day, a week, a month, or a year? My joys and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sorrows would be yours. Your joys and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sorrows would be mine. We<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">share a common past, present, and future. Our<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">time would be ours, not just<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">yours and not just mine. Imagine<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what <\/span><del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">should<\/span><\/del> <del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">could<\/span><\/del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> would happen if<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we stopped calling it it and instead called it we and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">really let <\/span><del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">each other<\/span><\/del> <del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the whole world<\/span><\/del><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> us<br \/>\n<\/span>in. That\u2019s <del>the future<\/del> the present i<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hope for. i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">d like to give this<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gift to you, to them, to us, to<br \/>\n<\/span>we.
