Euthanizing Canada Geese<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Rangeley\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No one really wants to, not the State guys<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or the Selectmen, but no other way<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to keep the tourists from stepping<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the goose shit or local business<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">losing money because of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No one to scoop it or hose it or use it<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or say Watch Your Step. Geese here<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">since the end of the last ice age<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have adapted admirably<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to human habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The geese follow the careful trail<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of cracked corn family by family,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">goslings in the order hatched<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">walk precisely in line between<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">their parents to an unnamed site<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">where in some unnamed way<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not wounded, diseased or rabid<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they will die to remove<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the slippery inconvenience<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of their shit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><em>2. Black Bear Hunting Referendum<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Statewide\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We keep bumping into bears<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">invading our habitat.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tentacled twining suburbs,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rich and fragrant garbage cans<br \/>\n<\/span>and the sweet greasy smell of burgers<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dripping fat onto charcoal<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lure bears.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For our own safety we vote to extend<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">black bear hunting by a month.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><em>3. Eradicating the Winter Tick<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Franklin, Somerset, Piscataquis Counties\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is it good management practice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to remove the host of a parasitic<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">species? Winter ticks have killed<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more than half the moose calves<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">born each spring, sucking their blood<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">until they slowly die.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adult moose host the winter tick.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><em>4. Euthanizing Canada Geese<br \/>\n<\/em><em>at the former Mercy Hospital, Portland\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When the shit got to be<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">too much and people complained<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the game warden or whoever<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">herded the geese into something<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and took them somewhere<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and maybe used gas.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At night.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No one saw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More geese, not understanding<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inconvenience or mercy,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">appeared the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>In the Dark<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One eye<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">flares<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in my headlights \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cheek ear antler shoulder<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">slam against me \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I hyperventilate<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hit the brakes hit the dirt,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">expect an animal bleeding,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">leg broken, thrashing in the road.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Above the dent gray-brown hair<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">clumped in the door handle<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">all that\u2019s left. A friend ties flies,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wants the hair. I<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pop out the dent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broken ribs, punctured lung<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the deer\u2019s death all that\u2019s left<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">after the sad, sad collision<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of our ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Rescuing Caterpillars on Birch Avenue<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I walk there I try to save them from the steamy asphalt river,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The squish of pulp trucks and the school bus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They drop everywhere from nowhere and squirm and wriggle<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With pure Purpose every which way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s hard to tell where they\u2019re headed.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I break bracken fronds and lure each one up<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And shake it off in the roadside jungle<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where it may \u2013 or may not \u2013 escape the birds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most words are longer than they are. I admire<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each one, exquisite in its minute plumage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mottled green, silky hairs, pairs of orange dots<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That undulate along its underside like tiny treads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Splotchy camouflage, naked segmented skin \u2013<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any bigger and you\u2019d scream and run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White, black back diamonds, bristles on a tiny bottlebrush.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hard to tell which end is which until it moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harder to imagine what ephemeral winged thing<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each will become and how.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hardest to know what may come to crush us or what<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can rescue us or who or what we will become.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Gypsy Moths<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Too hairy for any bird to eat<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">their caterpillars squirm and swarm<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">up the sides of my house, my car<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">defecate tiny green pellets that patter<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in continual rain from the trees<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they are defoliating, leave streaks<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of green slime when I sweep<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and hose them off daily. I am defending<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rome against the Goths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gypsy Moth &#8211; subtle mottled brown,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">small, antennae delicate as fern fronds<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or hummingbird feathers. Squashing one<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">leaves a gentle puff, an imprint<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of life in moth fur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upstairs I stop counting one day<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">at 50 crowding the windows<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">clinging to curtains, dying behind doors.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I take the vacuum cleaner, suck them in<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">out of mid-flutter. Moth Buster. I plug<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the vac hose so none escape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Undulating hordes of caterpillars continue<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to devour my trees leaf by leaf. Insatiable<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they feed to fuel their metamorphosis<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">into something almost pretty but are really<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vanguard of invasions sure to come<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown Tailed Moth Emerald Ash Borer<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, waves and<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">winds and fires as I stand here<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and wield my feeble broom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lucia Owen\u00a0 &nbsp; Maine: Wildlife Management in the Anthropocene 1.
