{"id":3702,"date":"2023-04-21T01:00:47","date_gmt":"2023-04-21T05:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/spire\/?p=3702"},"modified":"2023-04-21T09:05:02","modified_gmt":"2023-04-21T13:05:02","slug":"krosschell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/spire\/2023\/04\/21\/krosschell\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry Series: March into April; Product; Morning, Late February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jim Krosschell\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">March into April<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have an appointment with spring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Google informs me<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that none of the two million words of Thoreau\u2019s Journal<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">offer any description, drawing,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or meticulous tracking of the emergence,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in spring, of the crocus.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pity.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I would have liked to compare<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">his feelings with mine.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I would have liked to exceed his joy<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in even one small way,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for if I plan it right,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I can meet spring\u2019s true and lovely sybil<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not merely for a week<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of walks between Walden and Concord<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but for a month or more,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">March and April, when<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the distance between houses<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of two hundred miles, not two,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">makes a double spring. (Or prolongs winter.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I also walk, and in the yarded, tended city<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I look intently for her spears<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of purple, white, and yellow<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pushing directly out of dirt<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and stabbing the eye,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">soft and hard at once.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Well, perhaps I have exceeded his joy.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He writes much of love, nothing of sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I walk in Maine<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he is at my side.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We don\u2019t find too many signs<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of the strife among people.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nor will we find crocus for a while.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s not enough light and heat yet<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to bud in her bed. Cold keeps her safe<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">until she\u2019s ready.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But she will arrive, in April,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the natural course of things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For whatever reason<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he could not (or was not allowed to)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">find sexual love.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He did find love in general human kindness,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and of course in chipmunks and perch, orchids and trilliums.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perhaps that\u2019s a better way to understand death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But nature is changing now, unreliable.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spring comes earlier and earlier.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our flowers bloom several weeks ahead of his.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A quarter of the plants he recorded<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have perished from the earth,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">especially the cold-loving wildflowers.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And now the crocus too is rare,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lunch for the mice and chipmunks,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who, nearly-tame, have colonized<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">our lawns and sit down with them like diners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">***<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plants in the northeast need winter,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a chilling period of rain and snow and ice,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as perhaps do I.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How many walks do I have left?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How many stabs of vigor?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whence the thrill of emerging from February?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Will spring still \u201ccome to the window to wake me\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and climb into my bed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Product<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for Bill McKibben<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The word was invented<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when English was young:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">productum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Latin, something brought forth,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">merely meaning, then, the result of x times y,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">until the nineteenth century, full of iron,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">disfigured life, nature, language altogether,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hard and brutally, but not yet ironically,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which the twenty-first neatly takes care of,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as vast wealthy hordes of us leave our fruitful careers,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but not our cultural training in being productive.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(can\u2019t just rest, you know, must do stuff)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0gardens, libraries, pools\u00a0 \u2192 \u00a0 the accounterments of castles<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0pickleball, golf, regattas\u00a0 \u2192 \u00a0 the proxies of one-upmanship<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0travel, shopping, dining\u00a0 \u2192 \u00a0 the mementos of consumption<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0painting, pottery, poetry\u00a0 \u2192 \u00a0 the redemptions of capitalism<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0charity, boards, memoir\u00a0 \u2192 \u00a0 the canonizations of birthright<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One poor Dutch-American schmuck (me)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reviewing his output at age seventy-two,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">still blames the Father (John Calvin)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who said, on his deathbed,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat! Would you have the Lord find me idle when He comes?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes! (I wish?)
