Sorry for the inconvenience, but I think<\/span><\/p>\n

you should know that the hagfish await,<\/span><\/p>\n

right whale carcass bobbing for days with<\/span><\/p>\n

the buoyancy of the ship that struck her,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

afloat with last gasps of salty air and<\/span><\/p>\n

gas from tons of undigested zooplankton<\/span><\/p>\n

as containers head to port in diesel fogs;<\/span><\/p>\n

whale\u2019s belly rolls skyward as the sun rises,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

summons winds from corners of the Atlantic;<\/span><\/p>\n

the unreflective ship calmly hosting a wake,<\/span><\/p>\n

hull as stony and gray as granite island cliffs,<\/span><\/p>\n

unyielding, not even a sobbing rain to stream<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

down cheeks of deckhands as paid mourners;<\/span><\/p>\n

another day, another hit in a vast conspiracy,<\/span><\/p>\n

the dark slate wings of skates below flapping<\/span><\/p>\n

like godfathers\u2019 overcoats in seaside winds;<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a great white shark delivers prayers and the<\/span><\/p>\n

whale falls, wailing seabirds depart the mass<\/span><\/p>\n

and the hagfish get to work, rasping away<\/span><\/p>\n

evidence of a crime, spineless nervous systems<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

a few million years older than thought itself,<\/span><\/p>\n

not pondering the tragedy of huge, stilled heart<\/span><\/p>\n

and empty jail of skeleton, justice unfulfilled,<\/span><\/p>\n

docked ship unburdened of our guilty pleasures.<\/span><\/p>\n
