Ode to the Cold-Stunned Sea Turtle<\/h3>\n

Every year, volunteers search for cold-stunned sea turtles stranded on Long Island\u2019s east end beaches. In 2019, they found 85 cold stunned sea turtles, only 32 survived.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0-New York Marine Rescue Center<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Your tear-shaped body, frozen\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

in seaweed\u2019s tangled knots. Where in these nets,<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

this light, this tide, can I find you?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Once<\/span> you knew how to nose out of the birth-egg\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n

hide with moonlight and stars, your signs,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to shimmy the downslope<\/span> into open blue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your body, all wobble.\u00a0 Your flippers quick-<\/span><\/p>\n

slapped the undersea, a frantic rush\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to cross the salty vastness. Why this change now?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

All your senses trusting the way it\u2019s always been.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How soundly you slept in that blind-stitched sea pocket.<\/span><\/p>\n

Missed the cue: the water\u2019s slow cooling. Yes,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the sea changes around us\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

changes us\u2014in ways we barely detect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope this isn\u2019t true:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the only way I see\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

how much the sea has changed\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

is by losing you.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Paradise<\/h3>\n

Come closer<\/span><\/i>, the sea said,<\/span><\/p>\n

in this kingdom of slate-gray waves.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had slipped far down into myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I look down at the cobbles of feldspar<\/span><\/p>\n

and quartz, my fears rise. If only I\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

had paws or a leaning staff to walk across<\/span><\/p>\n

what doesn\u2019t give. A rush of wind<\/span><\/p>\n

through my coat, awakens that old urge\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to turn away. Lately I\u2019ve been practicing\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

to stay. I stand there like a sea wall.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s too cold to sit down. At the water\u2019s edge\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

scoured by rollers, a glacial moraine\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

flat-topped like a seat. Maybe a chair rock\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

where the ancients sat with their guides\u2014<\/span><\/p>\n

sunrise, sunset\u2014to ask for the sea\u2019s blessing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It came to me like a person: What changes<\/span><\/p>\n

me is outside of me. The riprap loosens. <\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

A kind of blessing how I found this place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Without the asphalt road cutting through\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

the corridor of pines with lofty shadows,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

juncos & sparrows,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

without the villager\u2019s hand-sketched map,<\/span><\/p>\n

I never would have heard the sea\u2019s two words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
