{"id":8,"date":"2018-07-23T15:34:04","date_gmt":"2018-07-23T15:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.umaine.edu\/speedlab\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2025-06-01T23:07:43","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T03:07:43","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/speedlab\/","title":{"rendered":"The SPEED Lab (Spatial Population Ecological and Epidemiological Dynamics Lab)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The SPEED Lab is the research group of Dr. David Hiebeler, a faculty member in the <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mathematics\/\">Department of Mathematics and Statistics<\/a> at the University of Maine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research efforts focus on computational and mathematical models of populations on landscapes.&nbsp; These landscapes often include different types\/qualities of heterogeneous habitat, arranged in various patterns with spatial correlations.&nbsp; These models have applications to the effects of habitat loss, the behavior of invasive species, and the spread of malicious software such as computer worms in networks &#8212; malicious software often uses biologically-inspired strategies to spread through networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outreach efforts over the years have included visits to K-12 classrooms, workshops aimed at K-12 students, an exhibit for children at the Maine Discovery Museum, and a software app for mobile devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Hiebeler can be contacted via email at: david.hiebeler (-at-) maine.edu.
