Junior Sujita Pandey obtains Jackson Laboratory Summer Internship
Sujita will be be working at Jackson Lab (JAX) as a Human Resource Intern. She will develop effective professional recruitment strategies and data analysis to support recruitment; utilize tools to map future talent and resources needed for JAX recruitment; and participate in team-based projects and supervisor shadowing.

SOE junior and sophomore selected as Margaret Chase Smith Scholars
Garrett Raymond (junior: Econ major) and Allyson Eslin (sophomore: Econ-political science-psychology major) received Margaret Chase Smith Public Affairs Scholarships for 2015-2016. Students who are awarded the scholarship ” show promise for future leadership in and contribution to public affairs”.

Dylan Bouchard wins AAEA travel award
First-year grad student Dylan Bouchard is awarded an AAEA Trust Travel Grant so he can attend the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association Meetings in San Francisco

Maine Development Foundation has new graduate intern – SOE’s Elyse Doyle
Elyse will join Maine Development Foundation for the summer and brings excellent skills in economic analysis and additional exciting energy to the team.  Elyse is from Gray and is working toward her MA in Economics.

Strong showing at Maine Economics Conference
SOE had four graduate students (Dorina Grezda, Abby Kaminski, Robert Langdon, Kate Warner) and two undergraduates (Chelsea Ogun, Ryan Jennings) presenting posters. Abby’s poster won the graduate student award.

SOE Undergraduate obtains research funding
Chelsea Ogun received a $1000 research grant from the UMaine Center for Undergraduate Research to assess the current state of climate science education in Maine public schools  Chelsea will work with faculty advisor Mario Teisl and two PhD students to analyze data that will help identify online educational resources for teachers and develop a teacher-led workshop on climate change curriculum.

Grad students Dorina Grezda and Nehat Dobratiqi participated in a Leadership Retreat in Washington, DC, organized by USAID’s Transformational Leadership Program.
This participatory, executive-style leadership training provided students with the opportunity to meet with experts in their fields and engage in strategic planning exercises. They also met with representatives from the World Bank and International Finance Corporation.

Undergrad Vinny Paris accepted to the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) at Oak Ridge National Labs (ORNL)
The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at Department of Energy laboratories.  Vinny will be working in the Computer Science and Mathematical Division at ORNL.

Undergrad Justin Conant was recently accepted into the Edward Jones Financial Advisor Career Development Program.
Justin will be spending 7 months in St. Louis for training after he completes his Series 7 and Series 66 exams. He strongly believes that he couldn’t have done this without the help and guidance of the SOE as they go above and beyond every day for their students

PhD student Sandra Goff wins Edith Patch Award
The Edith Patch Award is given by the Friends of Dr. Edith Marion Patch each year to graduate and undergraduate women in acknowledgement of distinguished work they have done while at the University of Maine, and in recognition of their promise for future contribution to the fields of science, agriculture, engineering, or environmental education.  Members of the committee were impressed by the rich integration of research, teaching, and service in Sandra’s exploration of the social aspects of environmental and economic behavior.
