Welcome from the Interim Director of the School of Economics

Welcome to The University of Maine’s School of Economics (SOE). Consistent with UMaine’s vision, SOE faculty strive to transform lives through teaching, research, and public service.

We offer undergraduate and graduate students training in Economics, Financial Economics, and Environmental & Natural Resource Economics. We also enthusiastically support and advise students in the Ecology & Environmental Sciences (EES) program. Our undergraduate and graduate programs encourage students to think analytically and critically about economic and policy issues, and provide a solid foundation for diverse career pathways. We train students to be effective leaders, thinkers, workers, and citizens.

We conduct economics research to address societal problems, seize opportunities, advance solutions, and make discoveries. By aligning our research and training with the needs of stakeholders in Maine and beyond, we proudly carry out public service, support UMaine’s Land and Sea Grant Mission, and give students hands-on, real-world research experiences.

Through our teaching, research, and public service, we help advance UMaine’s 3 strategic goals by strengthening Maine’s economy; providing accessible, affordable, & high-quality education; and enhancing UMaine’s learning and working environment.

We support UMaine’s efforts to sustain a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive learning and working environment, and, more broadly, support efforts to strengthen the economics profession by making it more welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and productive (click here to access the American Economics Association’s Best Practices for Economists).

On behalf of the SOE faculty and staff, I extend a warm welcome  and invite you to join our SOE community.

Regards,

Dr. Kathleen P. Bell
