SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision of the Director of Breathe, Director of Clinical and Behavioral Support Services, and building administrators, Breathe social workers provide services to students to address social, emotional and behavioral challenges that interfere with the student accessing their education. In alignment with the district’s Portland Promise and the Social Work Code of Ethics, Breathe social workers provide intense therapeutic supports for students with behavioral disabilities, as well as serve as advocates for students’ access to the least restrictive learning environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides individual and group social work services within special education day treatment programs, both self-contained and inclusive models, to students and families based on needs assessment and ongoing evaluation.
  • Provides assessment of emotional and behavioral needs with recommendations for clinical and/or environmental interventions at school, home and/or in community with quarterly reassessment.
  • Participates in school-based teams involving collaboration with other school personnel and community agencies.
  • Provides crisis intervention and appropriate referrals and follow-up.
  • Creates and monitors behavior plans for students with input from team.
  • Serves as a liaison between school, family, including linkage to outside mental health agencies, and community resources; serves as a source of information regarding community resources.
  • Consults and coordinates child welfare and safety referrals and provides follow-up case-management.
  • Makes referrals to public or private agencies with appropriate follow-up.
  • Collaborates with families to strengthen home-school communication in order to reduce barriers to participating in the education process.
  • Develops and maintains intensive treatment plans (ITP), comprehensive assessments, student information, and other documents as needed.
  • Bill for section 65 Mainecare reimbursement for services.
  • Participates in the individual education plan (IEP), 504, and RtI teams and provide services as determined.
  • Develops individualized student social work goals for the IEP.
  • Supervises student social work interns.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities related to needs assessment for school community.
  • Applies knowledge of health, mental health, disabilities, and child development in order to ensure that children and families receive the full range of services they require.
  • Works with school community while attending to equity and cultural humility.
  • Maintains professional boundaries, code of ethics, and confidentiality.
  • If placed in in day treatment programming, performs necessary intake, treatment planning, supervision of BHPs, record-keeping and billing requirements.
  • Performs related work as needed.
  • Willingness to reflect on personal implicit bias and a commitment to challenging personal perspectives and deepening self-awareness.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of the pertinent standards and regulations in Maine

programs, low-income and culturally diverse populations, and trauma-informed practices.

  • Knowledge of the principles and methods of social work.
  • Knowledge of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse social work and teaching staff.
  • Ability to implement the goals and objectives of the program and reflect and evaluate the plans.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with PPS, community agencies, staff and parents.
  • Effective team leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills,  proficient computer skills, and time-management.
  • Experience and knowledge of the process of section 65 Mainecare reimbursement.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters degree in social work from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in delivery of clinical services to students and families.
  • Experience implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
  • Additional combinations of applicable education, training, and experience.


CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid license issued by the Maine State Board of Social Work Examiners.
  • Conditional Certification considered.
  • Certified in Safety Care or able to be certified.
