Recently, the University of Maine chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity toured Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction Laboratory at the University of Maine. While VEMI and SCIS has become well known for their STEM outreach in the community, this time they looked inward to give a help the University of Maine Community.

The students got to see some of the cutting-edge research around indoor navigation and virtual reality. Several of them got to enter a virtual world via one of VEMI’s several cutting-edge simulations. Some got to explore an ancient archeological site, while others got to dodge cannon balls.

“The tour was great, and I learned a lot. It’s really exciting to see such cutting-edge research happening right here on campus,” said Zach Hale, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

“It’s great to see campus organizations getting a glimpse of some of the work that we do here in SCIS,” said Matthew Dube, a PhD student in Spatial Informatics in SCIS and the chapter counselor for Sigma Phi Epsilon. “ I can definitely see this inspiring some of our members to get involved.”
