{"id":18,"date":"2010-12-07T13:59:27","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T18:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/umaine.edu\/risingtide\/"},"modified":"2021-06-23T15:24:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T19:24:59","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/risingtide\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Studies show that women\u2019s representation and advancement in academic faculty positions are affected by external factors that are unrelated to their ability, interest, and technical skills, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organizational constraints of academic institutions;<\/li>\n<li>Differential effects of work and family demands;<\/li>\n<li>Implicit and explicit bias; and<\/li>\n<li>Underrepresentation of women in academic leadership and decision making positions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/oir\/\">Office of Institutional Research and Assessment<\/a> tracks demographics that describe student and faculty populations at UMaine, and continues to provide information in support of Rising Tide research. This data, which reflected the inequities at the heart of UMaine&#8217;s NSF ADVANCE proposal, includes numbers of tenure-eligible and tenured faculty by gender and rank, promotion and tenure review outcomes, years in rank as associate professor, and retention statistics.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>View the data from the Office of Institutional Research by academic year:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<table literature base relative to women faculty in STEM\/SBS, and other academic disciplines.
