Videocase Materials for Novice College Mathematics Instructor
Professional Development

We are part of a larger team of researchers who are developing video-based activities for use with novice instructors of college mathematics. Video-based professional development materials have become a relatively common component of programs for K-12 teachers but such materials are virtually non-existent for teachers of college-level mathematics. The goals for the materials are to promote discussion about teaching, create opportunities for instructors to consider various instructional approaches, and promote instructors’ inquiry into how students think and learn. Over the past three years, we have developed and piloted some materials and are in the midst of developing and piloting additional materials. We will provide background about case-based professional development, give an overview of the project and then have attendees at the colloquium try out and provide feedback on one of our activities.
