Trends in the restaurant industry have shown a steady increase in takeout services and an associated rise in food packaging waste. After being shipped, plastic packaging and serviceware are used once and then discarded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/upstreamsolutions.org\/why-we-cant-recycle-our-way-out-of-the-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Recycling cannot keep up with the plastics industry.<\/strong> <\/a>The U.S. only recycles about <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.resconrec.2022.106363\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5% of its plastic <\/a>waste. Many recycling processes consume <em>more<\/em> energy on top of the initial plastic production and create re-emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/upstreamsolutions.org\/why-compostables-and-bioplastics-arent-the-answer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGreen\u201d alternatives like compostables can have even worse environmental impacts<\/a> <\/strong>than conventional packaging; These containers require industrial composting facilities to break down, and l<strong>imited access to proper facilities reduces compostables\u2019 efficacy in waste reduction. <\/strong>The overwhelming majority of compostables end up <strong>landfilled<\/strong> or <strong>incinerated<\/strong>, just like plastic waste. Additionally, many of these bioplastics contain <strong>toxic additives, <\/strong>like <strong>PFAS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>All of this represents a pressing concern for the well-being of coastal communities <\/strong>as an overwhelming amount of waste ends up in marine environments. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/data_visualization\/how-many-marine-animals-does-ocean-plastic-kill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100,000 marine animals<\/a> die each year from plastic debris. Over time, plastic waste degrades and leaches chemicals that accumulate in the environment and in food chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For coastal communities and the seafood industry, ingestion of microplastics is a major concern.<\/strong> For example, emerging research in oyster aquaculture shows that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0045653522025589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">94% of oysters<\/a> harvested globally contain microplastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental Benefits of Reuse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reusable packaging reduces the environmental impact of supply chains<\/strong> in a variety of ways, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/reusables.org\/reusable-packaging\/environmental-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reusable Packaging Association<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Less solid waste\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The long life of a single reusable packaging item eliminates hundreds of single-use packaging items from entering the landfill, <strong>reducing solid waste by up to 86%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower greenhouse gas emissions\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reusable packaging eliminates the need to recycle or remanufacture single use packaging, <strong>reducing CO2 emissions by up to 60%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower energy consumption\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>energy used to manufacture reusable packaging items is up to 64% lower<\/strong> than is required to manufacture and recycle the single-use packaging items they replace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less water usage\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Single-use packaging systems use up to 80% more water<\/strong> during their lifecycle than reusable packaging, due to heavy water use during production, recycling, and disposal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less wasted product\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The superior product protection offered by reusable packaging results in <strong>lower product damage and waste<\/strong> &#8211; especially for perishables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Material recovery and reuse\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reusable models are truly circular, recovering packaging at the end of its useful life so that <strong>materials can be recycled and used to produce new reusable packaging.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crucially, reusable packaging systems also <strong>reduce demand for new plastic production. <\/strong><em>The end of plastic pollution begins with reuse<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure
