What is the latest guidance regarding pass/fail for spring 2021?
At the end of each of the last two semesters, UMaine students had the option to choose Pass/Fail grading for courses that would normally be letter-graded. This option recognized the challenges of adapting to learning during a pandemic.
On the advice of the University of Maine Faculty Senate and with the support of the University’s academic leadership, this option will not be offered at the end of the current semester.
The University’s normal Pass/Fail grading option is still available. Its deadline is being extended two weeks, until Feb. 22, 2021. This option is different in important ways from what was offered in 2020.
Here is the information you need to know:
- To be eligible, students must have sophomore standing, meaning at least 24 credits earned, and must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher;
- Only one course may be selected for P/F grading;
- Courses with P/F grading selected may not be used to fulfill requirements for the major or minor, for the college, or for general education;
- After the selection deadline of February 22, your decision cannot be reversed. The course you selected will remain P/F, even if you change your mind.
Because a spring 2021 course cannot be used to fulfill a requirement if it is selected for P/F grading, you are strongly encouraged to consult your advisor or college advising center before choosing P/F.
To select P/F grading for a spring 2021 course, you will need to fill and submit to your Dean’s Office the Course Add/Drop Request form. When submitting your request, be sure to indicate under the “Grade Option Change” section of the form the course in which you are changing to P/F.
