Present:<\/strong> David Bagley, Louis Bassano, Richard Borgman (Vice Chair), Brenda Collamore, Richard Judd (Secretary), Richard Kent, Thomas Sandford (Chair), Sarah McPartland-Good (ex-officio member), Gail Werrbach.<\/p>\n

1. Approval of 7 April 2023 Minutes:<\/strong> Louis Bassano moved acceptance; David Bagley seconded. Minutes were approved by unanimous vote.<\/p>\n

2. Discussion with Lisa Morin, Bodwell Center for Service & Volunteerism:<\/strong> After introductions, Louis explained the retiree survey based on the Extension project and the Southern University of New York survey, which included questions about retirees\u2019 willingness to return to campus as volunteers or to fill gaps on a short-term basis. The Council is considering a similar questionnaire, and would like suggestions about available volunteer opportunities and ways of organizing them. Lisa suggested a website but pointed out that the Bodwell Center works mostly with students volunteering for off-campus activities. The Center is not involved in on-campus volunteering. Lisa pointed out that volunteering projects should be cleared with HR to ensure they would not conflict with staff positions. A liability waiver would be necessary as well. She suggested contacting Nichole Lawrence at HR. Acceptable volunteer activities might include working with classes, presenting, mentoring, and other activities that are not normally part of the regular teaching responsibilities (e.g., full-time lecturing, grading, or other work that staff is paid to do). Lisa suggested the possibility that retirees could pair up with students on off-campus volunteering, and that the University\u2019s Center on Aging might be able to help. Retirees could possibly work with student organizations or help with \u201cMaine Hello\u201d and \u201cMaine Day\u201d events. Lisa suggested compiling a list of skills at a central location and including other UMaine campuses in the project. Lisa will email Sarah information on \u201cMaine Hello.\u201d Louis will send Lisa the SUNY survey, and Sarah will send the Council\u2019s distribution list to solicit help with the Maine Hello events.<\/p>\n

3. Retiree Homecoming:<\/strong> Richard Borgman reviewed assignments for the Homecoming and discussed contingencies if the President is unable to attend. Tom will send model letters for the Hikel Award recipient, and asked to be notified when the President sent out the letter. Recipients need to be notified soon. Karen Boucias (last year awardee) will attend. Council decided to wait a few more days and then invite this year\u2019s recipient. Tom will contact Diane Dunn after graduation about the awardees. Rick has ordered the brass plates for the clock. The student who won the scholarship should also be invited. As of April 26, 62 retirees have registered, some through the mail and others online. The registration form was in the newsletter and is on the website. Rick will send out reminders every two weeks and will send out an email to the twenty-six organizations needing tables, asking if they would like to contribute items to the swag bags. Rick will send out reminders to have sufficient food for the attendees. Rick will write the first draft of the announcement for the Hikel award winner and send out an evaluation form from Sarah to Tom. Rick will alter the old program to include this year\u2019s events, and have them available on our table. Copies of the Silver Tracks will also be on our table. Louis and Rich Kent will work on a one-page form that asks for suggestions for future Homecoming topics and events. A question will be added asking about \u201cother things you think this committee should discuss.\u201d In addition, those staffing the table can take suggestions orally. Sarah passed out a brochure titled \u201cExplore UMaine,\u201d with information on the campus. We will need to print name tags. The Registration Table and the Council\u2019s table can be combined. Mari will check off names of the attendees as they arrive at the registration table. Rick will prepare a list of organizations needing tables, and we will have their names on the tables. Richard J will take photos of the event. Council members should be available by 8:00. Hardhats will be available for the Composite Center, so we should have a rough idea how many will choose this activity. Perhaps we should print tour tickets to ensure attendees go to the right event. Gail, Brenda, Richard, and Louis will staff the registration table. We will need Silver Tracks newsletters for the table. Tom will greet the Hikel awardees. The door-prize drawing will be at the end of the event.<\/p>\n

5. Vacancies:<\/strong> Three to be filled: Member at Large (1) Classified (1) Professional (1) Honors (to be approved) Tom asked for suggestions, but the Council will take this up in the fall.<\/p>\n

6. Survey of Cooperative Extension Retirees:<\/strong> Louis explained that the field test for the questionnaire is almost ready.<\/p>\n

7. Updates:<\/strong> Tom sent a letter re: the ombudsman to Carolyn Dorsey. Slots for the schooner trip are all filled.<\/p>\n
