Susan Smith named director of MA, MFA programs in intermedia

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Susan Smith at the IMRC Dr. Susan L. Smith assumed the duties of director of the MA and MFA programs in intermedia effective September 1, 2020. Susan takes over leadership of the program from Dr. Owen Smith, the founding director of the intermedia program, which began admitting graduate students in 2008.

Susan has a long record of involvement with the intermedia program, having taught as a faculty member in the program for 6 years. She was appointed as Assistant Director of the intermedia program in 2018. She has also served as the coordinator and currently as the interim director of the Lord Hall art gallery.

She will report to Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies Scott Delcourt, and assumes leadership of a vibrant and growing graduate program that is housed in the Innovative Media, Research & Commercialization Center (IMRC), giving intermedia students access to state of the art design, fabrication and audio-visual equipment.

The contributions by Dr. Owen Smith in his role as the founding Director of Intermedia MFA and MA programs are also recognized. In this capacity he led the programs and over the years contributed greatly to their development and growth. His efforts, including care and concern for students, are appreciated.

The IMRC building was complete in February of 2013 with funding by a MTI competitive grant of $3.69 million.
