[involving] the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles in the performance of all activities related to scientific research.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"249b0a20-fe25-45bb-94c9-14b4e3e9bfa8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#249b0a20-fe25-45bb-94c9-14b4e3e9bfa8\" id=\"249b0a20-fe25-45bb-94c9-14b4e3e9bfa8-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standards for the responsible and ethical conduct of research are set forth by federal and state regulations, institutional policies, professional codes of conduct, and personal convictions.<sup data-fn=\"a98cebb6-f3ac-4fe7-8c88-878c6e853c42\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a98cebb6-f3ac-4fe7-8c88-878c6e853c42\" id=\"a98cebb6-f3ac-4fe7-8c88-878c6e853c42-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;At the federal level (Refer to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfr.gov\/current\/title-42\/chapter-I\/subchapter-H\/part-93?toc=1\">42 CFR Part 93 [external link]<\/a>), the U.S. Department of Health &amp; Human Services&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/\">Office of Research Integrity (ORI) (external link)<\/a>&nbsp;is vested with the authority to develop policies, procedures, and regulations for the detection, investigation, and prevention of research misconduct. ORI also serves a support role in assisting institutions as they develop individualized RCR training programs. Primary responsibility for maintaining such standards in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge rests with the faculty, collaborating staff members, and students. Every individual engaged in research and other scholarly activities is expected to be fully aware of the regulations and ethical guidelines governing his\/her discipline.
