The doctoral program in clinical psychology is committed to increasing the representation of diverse individuals in our training program. The program defines diverse identities with broad strokes, including age, ability status, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, language, national origin, race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, Veteran’s status, and socioeconomic status.

In line with the program’s commitment to attract and recruit diverse students, faculty conduct a holistic review of every graduate student application. In a typical year, the program receives over 120 applications. We make an initial selection of promising applicants based on a composite of research and clinical interests reflected in the Personal Statement, letters of reference, undergraduate Grade Point Average.  To ensure adequate preparation for entering our strongly research-oriented program, we favor applicants with successful undergraduate coursework in science and mathematics and research experience. See Student Admissions, Outcomes, and Other Data for more information on the qualifications of our incoming students. In line with our holistic approach to admission, in some cases, a low GPA can be offset by other strengths in the application such as  research experience and letters of recommendation. Applications are rarely rejected purely based on low grades alone. As part of our ongoing efforts to increase diversity in our program, we encourage minority-group students to apply.

To increase our ability to interview a broader pool of applicants and to reduce economic barriers associated with in-person interviews, our program conducts an initial round of video interviews. Applicants who are a particularly good fit with a prospective mentor are invited to a virtual interview day during which they meet with faculty and graduate students. In most years, we admit 5 to 7 students; the actual number varies depending a variety of factors including and the availability of assistantships and faculty advisors. The 25 students currently in the clinical training program represent a wide range of ages and geographical areas.
