Community message about the passing of a UMaine student — Jan. 28, 2026

Dear members of the University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,
We are deeply saddened to share news of the death of Kasie Malcolm, a junior majoring in chemical engineering at the University of Maine. Kasie passed away today following an off-campus workplace incident.

The loss of a student is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with Kasie’s family, friends, classmates, faculty, and all who knew and cared for him. We recognize that news like this can be very distressing and may bring up many emotions. Please know that you are not alone and support is available.

The university is in contact with Kasie’s family and out of respect for their privacy, we will not share additional details at this time.
