Appointment of Dr. Gabriel Paquette as UMaine Interim Executive VPAA and Provost — July 2, 2025
Dear members of the University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gabriel Paquette to a 12-month term as the University of Maine’s interim executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, effective July 1, 2025.
Dr. Paquette has served as senior associate provost and acting associate vice president for academic affairs since April 2025. Before joining UMaine as associate provost for academic affairs and faculty development in February 2023, Dr. Paquette held several academic leadership roles. At the University of Oregon, he was vice provost for academic affairs after previously serving as dean of the Clark Honors College. At Johns Hopkins University, he was director of the Latin American studies program.
At UMaine, Dr. Paquette holds the appointment of professor of history and is the acting director of the UMaine Press. He previously held research and teaching positions at Cambridge University, Harvard University, Wesleyan University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Oregon. The author of three books, Dr. Paquette’s research focuses on aspects of European, Latin American, and international history. His essays have also appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Times Higher Ed, Inside Higher Ed, History Today, the Times Literary Supplement, among other publications.
I am immensely grateful that Dr. Paquette has agreed to serve in this critically important role. His past experience, coupled with his deep commitment to our academic enterprise and his vision for the future, makes him an ideal leader to advance and shape the mission and goals of the University of Maine.
