Maine Memo — Recent news

Dear University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,

On Friday, June 24, the Supreme Court released its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the federal protection of abortion rights after nearly five decades. The decision does not change abortion rights in Maine, but has had a profound impact on our community and across the nation.

The University of Maine believes in equity, human rights, and dignity for all people. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are foundational to our mission.

We will continue to provide access to health care and connect students, faculty, and staff to resources where available. The Cutler Health Center is available to students in Orono, and Down East Community Hospital is a resource for students in Machias. Students, faculty, or staff in need of additional support can contact the Counseling Center, the university’s Employee Assistance Program or the Dean of Students Office.

The Supreme Court also announced decisions in several other high-profile cases over the last two weeks. These include cases that involve tribal law, religious freedom, immigration, gun rights, and new limits on EPA regulation of power plant emissions. For many, these decisions were shocking and difficult to understand. For others, they were long-awaited victories.

As a university community, we bring together diverse perspectives and beliefs. It is the role of higher education to foster informed and respectful debate, discussion, and framing of issues, and that will continue here. Respectful dialogue is imperative to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive campus environment.

I wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend.

Sincerely,

Joan Ferrini-Mundy
President
