At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Lt. Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.

Dear University of Maine and University of Maine at Machias communities,

Congratulations on completing spring semester 2022!

I have greatly enjoyed being able to be back together, in person, for the many celebrations and capstones events that make this time of year so special.

I have attended student performances, award ceremonies, symposia, and presentations across all disciplines. During each, I have been reminded of the creativity and determination that our students and faculty bring to this community, and of the incredible scholarship undertaken here. The caliber of talent, experience, and knowledge that you share with us brings me immense joy and pride.

Being able to share these experiences in person has been a wonderful reminder of the vibrancy of our community. The spirit of UMaine and UMaine Machias is most palpable when we are together.

With that in mind, I would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Maine Day. Volunteers from across campus came together to help prepare for our upcoming Commencement ceremonies and give back to our community. Thanks to your efforts, UMaine’s grounds look great, and 50,000 meals were prepared during the Meal Pack-Out event.

On both campuses, more buds and blossoms show their colors every day. The yellow tulips in Machias are beginning to sprout. The flowers were planted by Dr. Gayle Kraus and her students last fall as part of an effort to bring Hope Gardens to campus and initiate a conversation about mental health. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the yellow buds could not have had a timelier arrival.

In so many ways, this is a time of hope and celebration. I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s graduates and to the friends and family members who have helped you succeed over the years.

The Class of 2022 is “my class,” as we began our journey here at the same time — you as first-year students and me as the new president. And what a journey it has been! None of us could have expected what was ahead of us, but I am grateful to have had you as traveling companions. Over the past four years, I have witnessed your remarkable growth. You arrived with goals, talent, and a resolve to succeed, and leave now as accomplished students, athletes, and community leaders.

Whether you are now embarking upon the next chapter of your academic career, have taken the first step into your professional life, or are planning to consider your options while hiking the Appalachian Trail, I am confident in your success. You have proven time and again that you have the skills, talent, persistence, and spirit to excel. I will be rooting for you.
